Herb Ellis was an American jazz guitarist born in Texas in 1921. He was a prominent member of the “West Coast jazz” scene in the 1950s, and worked with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald. Ellis was known for his virtuosity on the guitar and his swinging style, which blended elements of swing and bebop. He recorded many albums as a bandleader and as a sideman, and was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame in 2000.
